Violin in the core curriculum?!
Wow... this is interesting! http://newsinfo.iu.edu/web/page/normal/8987.html
It starts... "Starting in late September, all 46 first-graders at Bloomington's Fairview Elementary School added a new subject to their regular class schedules: violin."

There's a school here in central NJ that did the same thing. When the program started, it was not run by a violin player, meaning that most of the kids were just sawing at the strings... yeeouch. It is now under the direction of a violinist and has better results. Now, all students in this parochial elementary school are required to choose a specialty of instrumental or general (mainly choral) music, and the instrumental classes offered are violin and band.
The program as a whole almost works. At the very least, the students are learning about music in a hands-on way, even the ones that aren't really learning the assigned music itself.
